The Challenge
The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) needed an update to their public-facing website. Facing major staff shortages across the state, they needed to bring more attention and clarity to the wide variety of positions available with VADOC.
Although user research was not available on this project, I was able to conduct interviews with the business owners to better understand their goals and incentives. After several rounds of interviews to gather information, I was able to extract key knowledge that would guide my design decisions.
Understand
Using the information gathered in the previous stage, I was able to build out the initial structure of the site.
Define

Using the documents from the previous stage, I moved into the wireframing stage. I started with lo-fidelity wireframes for each section of the site in order to identify any issues early in the process. Once reviewed by the business owner, I then moved on to mid-fidelity wireframes. This allowed the business owner and teammates to better visualize the end product without getting distracted by fonts, colors or imagery. Once approved, I was able to design the page/s in hi-fidelity with clickable elements so the business owner could view, walk through and visualize the product as it would be post-development. This allowed the team to make mistakes early and often when the cost was much lower.

Impact
45% Increase in Applications
Using design-thinking methodology, the team was able to increase the number of applicants to the VADOC by 45%. We were able to measure the increase through the use of Google analytics and by the number of applications received in comparison to previous quarterly numbers.
